Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

Lending a favorite book to a friend is a time-honored tradition that has just received a twenty-first century makeover. Amazon now allows Kindle users to lend books for up to 14 days to their friends before automatically being returned to their virtual bookshelves.

Lending is not limited to Kindle e-readers, with people using any Kindle App able to read loaned books that have been purchased from Amazon including LCD tablets like iPad and smartphones such as Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7. Being able to lend a book without the risk of never seeing it again or of the book suffering a mysterious and destructive fate is reassuring. There is also great appeal in being able to instantly lend a book, when convenient or on a whim.

With the popularity of Kindle Apps and e-readers increasing and Amazon having record sales of Kindle e-readers, a new era of book lending appears to have been ushered in. A few taps of the fingers and your friend can borrow your favorite book any time of day or night, regardless of location. E-book formats of popular books are frequently at the top of Amazon best-seller lists and Amazon has recognized the positive social aspects of sharing a good read through multiple Kindle platforms.

There are, however, some limitations to the ease at which people can share their books on the various Kindle platforms as publishers have the ability to opt-out of participating in the lending scheme. It is yet to be seen how many publishers will choose not to allow their books to be loaned through Kindle and how the agreement to lend will influence the purchasing decisions of buyers. The lure of being able to share a book across Kindle e-readers and devices using the Kindle Apps cannot be discounted.

There are those that are dubious about the future of Kindle e-readers in the face of multi-use devices such as the iPad or the various smartphones. Amazon has addressed this effectively by creating Kindle Apps that embody the Amazon policy of Buy Once, Read Everywhere. The Whispersync technology allows users of any Kindle platform to save their bookmarks, notes and any highlighting and synchronize them across their various Kindle devices. While Kindle e-readers potentially may not be as lucrative for Amazon in 2011 as the incredible sales in 2010, the various Kindle Apps and the addition of a socially dynamic lending feature mean Kindle in its various forms appears to be here to stay.
